Autumn 2010

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Aren't we fortunate to have such an adaptable pastime (obsession!) and such a
portable medium. A watercolour artist can be happy anywhere, any time. You can
sketch on a hilltop, in an airport, a café, a waiting room, a cathedral, your lounge - and
still take in the TV programme – almost! You can stow a mini-kit in a car, a rucksack, a
travel bag; even a glider. Sunshine is a bonus, but I've seen our members painting
under a porch, a brolly, a tree, a bridge and recently I discovered that if you have no shelter, light drizzle

produces a delightful speckled effect! Our outdoor painting
activities have often shown that conditions that would make a normal person huddle
indoors, can produce turbulent skies perfect for a glorious watercolour painting. So,
whether you paint with 20 rugged-up artists squinting into a blast of southerly seaspray
or alone in your sunny garden, you have a hobby for all seasons. So, what do we
have planned?
A big thank you goes to Helen Wilson for being alert to a special opportunity and
bringing it to fruition for us. Helen heard her MP, Katrina Shanks, mention that the
foyer of Parliament could be enhanced with artworks. Helen and Pavithra Devadatta,
worked enthusiastically with Michelle Janse, Displays and Collection Coordinator for
Parliament. In a very limited time during the summer holiday, they mustered a display
of 14 paintings. We hope the invitation will be repeated, and if so we will offer the
opportunity to all members.
Our next weekend safari is to be in Ohakune, on the south-western slopes of Mount
Ruapehu, at the end of April. We are hoping some of our northern members will join
us to paint mountain and bush scenery and enjoy the socialising. Two lovely Taupo
artists are happy to make our Friday evening buffet. Further details below.
Martin Jenkins is on the ball as always with workshops, courses and monthly painting
events for this term. Thanks, Martin. As our beginners courses are so popular, we
decided to offer a drawing course, with a view to easing the path for new painters.
We say farewell to our talented Wellington artist and committee member, Tetyana
Khytko, outstanding for her ability to make a striking work of art from a simple subject.
Very best wishes, Tetyana.
Looking ahead, we have booked Shed 11 for our big exhibition, Splash® 7, in October
2010. We plan to keep our exhibition recipe fresh by introducing some categories with
prizes, as well as the awards we have had in the past. See below for the range of
categories, so you can wet those brushes and get practising for your entries. Also, we
offer quality watercolour greetings cards by members for sale during Splash®, so if you
produce those, do let us know.

Happy painting, Sue Wild

INSPIRATION – Where Does It Come From?

A personal view by Phil Dickson
What's the difference between Tienenmen Square, Beijing and Newman Terrace,
Wellington? I don't expect readers to answer the question, rather than wonder why I
would suggest any similarities between the two places. I've always enjoyed tramping in places like the Tararuas,

but also in and around my urban environment as well. During my years working in downtown Wellington, an activity

I frequently looked forward to was the walk to and from work and often a lunch time stroll somewhere. Not for me
was a drive to work something I relished on more than odd occasions. For many years I used to commute by train

and loved that as well. Not only was the train a great way to travel to work, but there was always a walk

associated with getting to and from the stations at each end of the trip. I still love to walk and it’s the

travelling through the landscape that is my most constant source of inspiration. Sure there are times when I've

been in a hurry and my mind is on other things instead of being open to the moment. I know too that the times I

enjoy the walk most are those following the completion of tasks that have stolen my attention; times when I was

bogged down, after which suddenly there's relief and my attention can be open to everything around me. If you
like, call it wander lust. It's a strange thing, but most of us work best under a degree of pressure. Painting
pictures is no different than other activities in that if there's a deadline like an exhibition
looming, you have to get on with it if you are going to be on show! So I accept the pressure and the hype

associated with exhibitions. I enjoy the attention the public give when pictures are displayed, and of course the

joy of selling. But to return to the point;

Phil Dickson

PARLIAMENT EXHIBITION

For a few weeks prior to Christmas, there appeared to be an opportunity for
Watercolour New Zealand to display artworks from members. Early in the New Year,
the Speaker gave his approval and so we had a very short space of time to assemble
some paintings. It was the brainchild of Katrina Shanks MP to utilise Parliament space
for artworks. This short timeframe allowed us to invite some Wellington artists to
submit work. 14 paintings hang in a strategic spot and are viewed by Parliament staff,
Select Committee people and visitors to the city. Michelle Janse, Displays and
Collection Coordinator for Parliament assisted us with placement. Paintings will be on
display for February and March. Positive reactions to the display are coming our way.
Following the exhibition, a review of its success will be undertaken.

TETYANA KHYTKO off to Australia

At our last committee meeting, a very tempting, chocolate cake appeared on the coffee
table, waiting for the break at half time. Eyes kept getting distracted by the cake in
anticipation but then saw the card attached. It was from our fellow committee member
and fellow artist Tetyana Kyotko, the card sadly announced that she was off to
Canberra with her husband, who had been offered a bright new job there.
Originally from the Ukraine, with art studies from the Kiev University of Fine Arts under
her belt, Tetyana immigrated to New Zealand in 2000 with her family. Since joining
our group shortly after she arrived, she has shared her enthusiasm and colourful -
visually exciting watercolours with us. She has also contributed to the group in many
other ways as well, always there to lend a helping hand with most splash exhibitions -
did you know she was also responsible for the design of the wonderful colourful
invitations of our recent Splash® exhibitions? Through these Splash® exhibitions she
has steadily built up a strong following for her unique and special style and last year
was selected as the winner of the Watercolour New Zealand art award.
Although you’re just moving across the ditch to the west island, we hope that you’ll still
be with us and be able to send some of your special paintings to partake in future
Splash® exhibitions. We wish you well Tetyana, we’ll miss you.

WATERCOLOUR NEW ZEALAND ON THE WELLINGTON WATERFRONT

Picture yourself sitting on the Wellington waterfront, painting our beautiful city and
harbour….and picture yourself selling your work to locals and tourists alike, fresh off
the easel.
Watercolour New Zealand has formed a relationship with Wellington Waterfront,
allowing WNZ members to paint and sell their work in this vibrant public recreation
area.
Our goal is to help bring colour and artistic interest to the waterfront, all year round, at
the same time as showcasing our capital through watercolour painting.
Initially, there will be a trial period of 3 months, starting from 15 March 2010, allowing
our members to paint and sell seven days a week, anywhere between the Bluebridge
Terminal and Chaffers Marina.
Twenty painters will be allowed to paint at any given time, permits will be issued to all
interested members and a booking/notification system will be put in place.
Artists are requested to give all due consideration and cooperation to the public,
business operators and any events that are being held on the waterfront. Artists will
need to be fully independent for their needs, provide their own easily transportable
equipment/display material and all areas used should be left as they are found.
So, now’s the time to get out there and start scoping our new patch! Wellington
Waterfront has suggested that we introduce ourselves to businesses and tourism
operators and get to know our neighbours.
11
In the first 3 months of the trial, we will look forward to your feedback and suggestions
as to how the arrangement is working, and together, how we can ensure the long term
presence of watercolour artists on the Wellington Waterfront.
Please register your interest and request for a permit from Alison Ross Hehir via
emailor telephone her on 021 499 063

Painting on the Wellington Waterfront - General Guidelines March 15th – June 14th

Watercolour New Zealand has entered into an exclusive arrangement with Wellington Waterfront, allowing WNZ

showcasing our Capital through watercolour painting, at the same time as providing our members with an

opportunity to promote and sell their work.

Initially, there will be a trial period of 3 months, starting from March 15th 2010, allowing our members to paint

get a permit, please advise that they can either join WNZ or contact Wellington Waterfront. Other groups may be

included after the WNZ trial period expires.
